Kolkata: Traces of rain on Tuesday morning could do little to make an impact on the rising heat and humidity. While the Met office forecast rain relief by the weekend, the respite for Kolkata is likely to come by Thursday. Even as the Met office has predicted enhanced rain activities in south Bengal from Wednesday, officials said the chance of rain in Kolkata is higher between Thursday and Friday.
"So far, the prevailing conditions suggest a 30% chance of rain for Kolkata on Wednesday, but the chance goes up to 80% by Thursday. This time, the intensity of the thunderstorm activity should be enough to drag down both the mercury and the humidity," said Met scientist HR Biswas, head of Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
The Met officials expect the mercury to dip by two to three degrees. The last time the city encountered a thundershower was nine days ago. In the absence of rain respite, the city has been reeling under intense heat and humidity. Even as the maximum temperature hovered around the normal mark, the high humidity made the heat harsh.
