KGMU fines security agency of ₹19 lakh for sandalwood theft
Lucknow: An inquiry committee on Thursday recommended recovery of around Rs 19 lakh from the security agency for failing to prevent theft of sandalwood trees from the vice chancellor’s residence at King George’s Medical University (KGMU).The theft took place in July 2025, when two large sandalwood trees were cut and taken away despite the presence of security personnel and CCTV surveillance in the area.The committee observed that the incident could have been prevented with greater alertness by security staff. It has also suggested strengthening security arrangements, enhancing monitoring and taking action against responsible personnel to avoid such lapses in future.KGMU spokesperson, Dr KK Singh said the amount, based on the estimated value of the stolen trees, will be recovered from the concerned security agency.
