Lucknow: Dawa Sherpa, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre known for his integrity and people-centric policing, passed away in
Jammu on Monday morning after a brief illness. He was 64.
He is survived by his son, Minga Sherpa, deputy commissioner of Udhampur in Jammu & Kashmir. Sherpa had been staying with him in Jammu. His demise triggered grief in police and administrative circles, with colleagues remembering him as a “gentle yet firm” officer who combined discipline with humility.
A native of
Darjeeling, Sherpa had a long and distinguished career in UP Police, serving as SP/SSP in several sensitive districts, including Azamgarh, Sonbhadra, Bhadohi, Sultanpur, Sitapur, Kushinagar and Muzaffarnagar. He later held senior roles, including ADG, Gorakhpur zone.
He retired in 2022 as additional director general (ADG). At the time of superannuation, he was posted as ADG, CBCID, Lucknow, overseeing sensitive criminal investigations.

Omar Abdullah expressed grief and extended condolences, praying for strength for the bereaved family and peace for the departed soul.
Family sources said his last rites will be performed in Darjeeling.
