Sivaganga: A clash erupted between Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (
DMK) functionaries in Karaikudi on Monday night after NTK's Idumbavanam Karthik made an offensive remark against Congress MLA Mangudi in a news channel.
At a discussion organized by the channel, representatives from DMK, AIADMK, and NTK featured to talk about regional issues. During the talk, Idumbavanam Karthik made offensive remarks against Mangudi.
Supporters of DMK took strong exception to the comments. Soon, the war of words rapidly spiraled out of control and members of both parties exchanged blows. The anchor, the programme coordinator for the news channel, and an NTK member suffered injuries while attempting to pacify the groups.
Following the clash, NTK cadres blocked a main road in protest, demanding action against those who initiated the violence. Police rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters. The situation was brought under control after police assured a fair inquiry into the incident. Traffic in the area was disrupted for nearly an hour.
Two FIRs were registered at the Karaikudi south police station on complaints of DMK and NTK functionaries. Police are investigating.
