after completing 1,860 performances in marathi since 1982, purush, a play which addresses universal issues between a man and woman, will now be staged in hindi to cater to a wider audience. written by the late jaywant dalvi, the play is woven together with a social commentary, and is said to transcend differences of caste, creed and class. purush, directed by the legendary vijaya mehta and produced by nana patekar, is scheduled to premier at the tata theatre on august 19.
the play encompasses a distorted and aggressive form of masculinity that translates into stoic oppression. "it''s about values and sensibilities being violated in this new age," elaborates mehta. the play is being presented by the national centre for the performing arts and natya malhar. with an impressive cast comprising chandrakant gokhle, usha nadkarni, ayesha julka, ravi kale and prajakta dighe apart from nana patekar, purush promises to be disturbingly intense. most members of the original cast have been retained in the hindi version. bombaytimes@indiatimes.com
