NOIDA: The transport department on Tuesday started a monthlong drive to register e-rickshaws. Though the battery-powered vehicles have been plying on several city routes, they are not registered with the assistant regional transport office yet.
Rachna Yaduvanshi, assistant regional transport officer (administration), said the government has amended the Motor Vehicle Act, 1989, and making registration of e-rickshaws compulsory.

"The transport department will provide them permits to ply in the city. The applicants require a valid commercial driver's licence. Those who don't have a driving licences, will need to get one," Yaduvanshi said.
"Those vehicles not registered with the transport department by August shall be fined," said the official.
The Authority has prepared a detailed plan and identified 12 routes on which e-rickshaws will be allowed to ply, connecting various residential sectors and villages, district hospital, ESIC Hospital, GIP mall, ARTO office, registry office, district magistrate's office and senior superintendent of police's office among others.
Fitness certificates will be given to e-rickshaws initially for two years, which will be renewed after every three years thereafter.
