Visakhapatnam: Lemon prices have surged by nearly 70% across parts of Andhra Pradesh as summer approaches, with traders warning of further hikes in the coming weeks due to a widening demand–supply gap. Consumers are paying anywhere between Rs 120 and Rs 140 per kilogram, depending on size and colour.Maximum temperatures in several districts have hovered between 33°C and 36°C over the past few days—1 to 2 degrees above normal—leaving coastal residents sweltering during afternoon hours.

Farmers in Guntur and neighbouring regions, the state's largest lemon producers, are reaping the benefits of soaring prices. Consumers, however, complain of being squeezed as rates have more than doubled since early February.Lemons that fetched Rs 60–Rs 70 per kilogram just weeks ago are now retailing at Rs 120–Rs 140, marking an almost 90%, according to Vizag trader M Bangaramma. Rising temperatures have driven demand sharply upward over the past fortnight, she added.Traders predict prices will climb further as supplies from Guntur and Godavari decrease during peak summer. With demand outstripping arrivals, the squeeze is expected to intensify.Rich in Vitamin C, lemons remain the most accessible citrus fruit in local markets. Consumers say lemon water mixed with mint continues to be their go-to refreshment, helping them stay hydrated through the hot and humid season.
