Naidu rolls out free travel for differently-abled, 13 lakh to benefit
Vijayawada: In a major step towards building an inclusive and equitable society, the state govt on Wednesday launched ‘Divyang Shakti' scheme, joining a select group of Indian states in providing free bus travel to people with disabilities. Building on the success of the free bus travel initiative for women, the govt has now extended the benefit to differently-abled persons as well. The scheme was implemented swiftly following its announcement by chief minister Chandrababu Naidu recently.Marking the launch, Naidu, deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, and IT & HRD minister Nara Lokesh undertook a special bus journey with beneficiaries from Mangalagiri to Penumaka on Wednesday, and interacted with differently-abled people, listening to their experiences, understanding their challenges, and seeking feedback on the welfare initiatives. The interaction provided first-hand insights into mobility issues faced by the beneficiaries, reinforcing the need for accessible public transport. The leaders reiterated their commitment to removing barriers and ensuring dignity, independence, and equal opportunities for all. Following the journey, the chief minister hosted a special lunch for beneficiaries to mark the launch of the scheme in a spirit of inclusion and solidarity.
Naidu said while the NDA govt in the state has rolled out several welfare initiatives in the last 21 months, the launch of ‘Divyang Shakti' scheme has given him immense satisfaction. Addressing the beneficiaries, he said differently-abled persons are individuals with unique abilities who overcome challenges to achieve success. "The govt has consistently supported them through initiatives like assistive devices and mobility support, while enhancing pensions from ₹500 to ₹6,000, with higher aid for those with severe health conditions. The free bus travel in five categories of buses will reduce financial burden and help beneficiaries save up to ₹2,000 a month. The scheme will benefit nearly 12.8 lakh people and improve access to jobs, healthcare, and education," he said. Stating that cost is not a concern, he said the focus is on dignity and inclusion, adding that more welfare measures will be introduced in future.
