The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday announced that Cyclone Montha has weakened into a cyclonic storm over coastal Andhra Pradesh and is expected to maintain its current intensity for the next six hours.

According to IMD, the Severe Cyclonic Storm Montha moved northwestwards at a speed of around 10 kmph over the past six hours before weakening into a cyclonic storm. As of 2:30 am (IST) on October 29, 2025, the system was centered near latitude 16.5°N and longitude 81.5°E, approximately 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur, 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam, 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada, 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha. The IMD said Montha is likely to continue moving northwestward across coastal Andhra Pradesh, maintaining its cyclonic strength for another six hours before weakening into a deep depression later. Latest observations also indicate that the rear section of the storm has made landfall, marking the gradual weakening phase of the system.

Cyclone Montha Live: 800 relief centres set up, pregnant women moved to hospitals
The Andhra Pradesh government has established more than 800 relief centres and shifted pregnant women to hospitals as Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) Montha is expected to make landfall around Tuesday midnight.

The government has also deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams in Kakinada district. To ensure 24-hour power in the area, 1000 electricians have been stationed there, while 140 swimmers with boats are also deployed in case of any eventuality, Kakinada MP Uday Srinivas Tangella told ANI.

Cyclone Montha was positioned about 180 km south-southeast of Kakinada at 1.30 pm, with the sea turning rough as the system moved closer to the Andhra Pradesh coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to the IMD, “SCS Montha moved north-northwestwards and at 1330 hrs IST of October 28, it lay about 100 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 180 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 270 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 500 km south-southwest of Gopalpur.”

The department said the cyclone is “likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast around Kakinada during the evening or night of October 28 as a Severe Cyclonic Storm, with maximum sustained wind speed of 90–100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.”
