Federal shutdown on track to set record as longest in US history
The ongoing standoff between President Donald Trump and congressional Democratic leaders is set to become the longest government shutdown in US history this week.
On Election Day, as voters head to the polls in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, the shutdown will tie the record for the longest ever.
If the impasse continues into tomorrow — which lawmakers say is almost certain — it will surpass the previous record, also set during Trump’s first term. That 35-day federal closure in late 2018 and early 2019 stemmed from a dispute over Trump’s demand for funding to build a border wall, a proposal Democrats refused to support.
