Tensions in the Middle East are escalating as an Italian UN convoy in southern Lebanon reportedly came under warning fire from Israeli forces. The convoy, part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was traveling from Shama to Beirut when at least one vehicle was damaged; no injuries were reported. Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto called the incident “unacceptable,” emphasizing that peacekeepers must be protected, while Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that Rome is seeking urgent clarification from Israel. The Israel Defense Forces have yet to comment. This comes amid a broader escalation, with Israel launching airstrikes across Lebanon, causing widespread damage and humanitarian concerns. Iran has warned it will “punish” Israel and is considering deterrent operations, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
