AHMEDABAD: Independent MLA
Jignesh Mevani has been appointed one of the seven working presidents of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee. The appointments were made late on Thursday.
Congress leaders said Mevani will shortly join the party.
The move comes ahead of the state assembly polls scheduled to be held later this year.
The seven working presidents include five MLAs Lalit Kagathara, Jignesh Mevani, Rutvik Makwana, Ambarish Der, Himmatsingh Patel besides Kadir Pirzada and Indravijaysinh Gohil.
They will take over the charge with immediate effect, a party release said.
Kagathara, Der and Makwana are MLAs from Saurashtra, while Himmatsinh Patel is an
MLA from Ahmedabad.
Mevani represents Vadgam constituency in north Gujarat. Kadir Pirzada is a senior south Gujarat leader who has been in the organization for a long time, and Indravijaysinh Gohil is a youth leader of the party. State Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that state regions and other factors have been taken into consideration while making the appointments.
GPCC president Jagdish Thakor said, “The party has appointed Jignesh Mevani as the working president of the state unit and he will shortly join the party formally.”
