Bengaluru UV radiation level hits ‘extreme’ 13: What you need to know

Bengaluru recorded a UV Index of 13 on Tuesday, categorised as “extreme” under WHO standards, despite the temperature being a moderate 32°C.

IMD officials flagged concern over the sharp jump in UV levels from 10 to 13 in less than two days, even before peak summer conditions set in.

Experts warned that any UV Index reading above 8 is considered dangerous and increases risks of sunburn, eye damage and long-term skin cancer.

The combination of rising temperatures and extreme UV exposure could accelerate dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Officials recommend full-sleeved cotton clothing, hats, UV-protective sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen, while schools and employers may consider limiting midday outdoor exposure.

Even before summer reaches its peak, Bengaluru and several regions across Karnataka have been facing unusually intense weather in early March. The city recorded temperatures ranging between 32°C and 33°C, while districts in north interior Karnataka saw mercury levels nearing 40°C, signalling an early spell of harsh heat.(All Images Used Are For Representational Purpose Only)
