Shimla: Heavy vehicle movement on the Darcha-Sarchu stretch of the Manali-Leh highway in Lahaul and Spiti district is likely to resume within the next three days.
Lahaul and Spiti deputy commissioner Kiran Bhadana said on Tuesday that the road, which passes through the over 16,000-foot-high Baralacha La, had been reopened for light motor vehicles through the joint efforts of the district administration and the 70 RCC unit of the Border Roads Organisation despite prolonged snowfall and adverse weather conditions.
Bhadana said if traffic movement remains smooth during the next three days, heavy vehicles will also be allowed on the route. She said the reopening of both the Baralacha and Shinkula passes this year in a short duration was a major achievement.
The police department has been directed to ensure traffic regulation and monitoring along the route to maintain passenger safety and provide immediate assistance during emergencies, added the DC.
Meanwhile, light rain was recorded at isolated places in the state on Wednesday even as the weather department issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in parts of the state till May 16.
