The US-based NRI who had allegedly shot dead his friend in a drug-induced haze on a roadside near Phase VIII on Saturday was a proclaimed offender (PO) in a two-year-old assault case in Barnala, Punjab, had managed a gym in his home town and drove a truck in America.

MOHALI: The US-based NRI who had allegedly shot dead his friend in a drug-induced haze on a roadside near Phase VIII on Saturday was a proclaimed offender (PO) in a two-year-old assault case in Barnala, Punjab, had managed a gym in his home town and drove a truck in America.
Manish Prabhakar, the accused, could not be produced before a judicial magistrate on Sunday as his condition deteriorated.

He was kept in rehabilitation ward of civil hospital in Phase VI till Sunday evening and then moved to emergency ward of PGI under police security. Police sources said he was muttering incoherently. DSP Navreet Virk, the investigating officer, said, "Manish was speaking on Saturday but now he is only mumbling. He appears not to remember the incident as the drug overdose has caused short term memory loss."
The police were struggling to find the three friends accompanying him when he allegedly killed Harpreet Singh, 26, of Sangrur, Punjab. DSP Navreet Virk said, "We sent a team to nab the friends but their families were not at homes."
At Barnala, the police were looking into criminal background of Prabhakar. Barnala SP Swarn Singh told TOI, "Manish was booked for thrashing, assaulting and trespassing about two years back. He entered the house of the complainant with his friends and assaulted the family. He was declared as proclaimed offender (PO) in the case but since he managed to land in the US, we were unable to arrest him."
Five years back, his family had opened a gym for him. It was then that he allegedly started to indulge in nefarious activities. Source said Prabhakar was a drug addict and a criminal. He was also booked in five other cases of assault, but they were later quashed. The family had not yet arrived here to meet their son
In the US, Prabhakar had married an Indian origin girl but later she divorced him.
Doctors in civil hospital of Phase VI said they referred Manish Prabhakar, the accused to PGI as his condition was worsening. "He is not able to speak or remember the past events," they said.
