Providing details, the MP said, “Our delegation attended the functions held to commemorate 90 years of Tagore’s connection with Indonesia. In 1927, Gurudev had travelled to Indonesia and met two freedom fighters Dewantara and Sukarno both of whom were influenced by him. Sukarno later had become the first president of Indonesia while Dewantara became the country’s first education minister.”
Nishank added that during his visit, he also informed the people of Indonesia about the Uttarakhand connection of Rabindranath Tagore. “After hearing that Gurudev composed his greatest book 'Gitanjali' in Ramgarh, our hosts expressed interest in visiting the place. It was thereafter decided that next year, an international conference on Gurudev would be organised in which Tagore scholars from India, Indonesia and others parts of the world would be invited,” said Nishank.
