CAG slams Aizawl Municipal Corporation for irregular disposal of garbage trucks, causing loss of Rs 3.16cr
Aizawl: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has criticised the Aizawl Municipal Corporation for irregular disposal of 45 garbage trucks, which led to a loss of Rs 3.16 crore to the state exchequer. The audit has urged the Mizoram govt to fix responsibility on officials involved. According to the report, the State Investment Project Management and Implementation Unit (SIPMIU), Aizawl, had handed over 54 new vehicles — 50tipper trucks and four pickups — worth Rs 10.28 crore to AMC on Oct 3, 2017, for garbage disposal in the capital city. According to the Mizoram Condemnation and Disposal of Government Vehicles Rules, 2011, medium vehicles have a prescribed life of 10 years or 2 lakh km before condemnation. Premature condemnation is permitted only if a vehicle is involved in an accident and is beyond economical repair. However, records show that AMC’s board of councillors decided in Dec 2018 to privatise the garbage trucks. Technical inspection confirmed the vehicles were in good condition. Despite this, the officials concluded that they were ‘no longer fit for economical repair’ and assessed their market value at as low as Rs 5.64 lakh each.
