Phule birth bicentenary celebrated in Belagavi
Belagavi: The 200th birth anniversary of social reformer Jyotirao Phule was celebrated at Dr BR Ambedkar Park in Belagavi Saturday. The event also commemorated the contributions of Savitribai Phule, who fought for women's education.Inaugurating the programme, Udayakumar Talwar, assistant commissioner of Belagavi City Corporation, said Savitribai Phule's struggle for women's education in 1848 enabled many women to study in schools. He said this created awareness about the value of education among the next generation and that her vision had been realised, with women today achieving on par with men in many fields.Dalit leader Mallesh Chougala said Jyotirao Phule worked for social equality through the Satya Shodhak Samaj and challenged social barriers by promoting girls' education.
