Madurai: The organs of a 47-year-old man, who died after a road traffic accident, were donated to benefit five people.
Sivakumar from Madurai district was travelling in a two-wheeler when the vehicle was hit by a four-wheeler near Rajakudi around 7.30pm on May 26. Sivakumar sustained a head injury, and was brought to the Govt Rajaji Hospital.
He was treated by neurosurgery and ICU teams, but despite active management he was declared brain dead on May 28.
The deceased’s wife Rajeswari consented to donate her husband’s organs. The organ harvesting was done at the trauma care centre.
The liver was donated to Dr Sundaram Hospital in Trichy. One kidney went to Govt Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Trichy and the other to Govt Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, Tirunelveli. Both cornea and his skin were donated to Madurai GRH. A total of five people benefited from the
organ donation.
The postmortem was conducted at GRH and the body was handed over to the relatives through the police department.
The administration of GRH paid homage to the departed soul, and the Madurai district administration gave state honours.
