MUMBAI:
Mumbai police detained 1,120 people with a history of assault and sexual offences on New Year's Eve to ensure no untoward incidents were reported. Besides this, 310 people including hawkers were penalized for petty offences and 30 for drug consumption.
Three instances, though, marred the celebrations. In the first case, a fight broke out among two groups of sloshed men at Ganpat Nagar slums in Borivli West, resulting in one of them getting seriously injured.
Three brothers, Bhatkun Singh (22), Lalit Singh (30) and Khushranjan (36) were arrested on attempt to murder charges. The trio accused Singh's aides of hitting them. A case of assault was registered against Singh's associates.
In the other case, two men were penalized at Malad for allegedly harassing a woman and her daughter outside the railway station around 8pm. But they could not be traced.
In yet another case, Marine Drive police held a 26-year-old and his friend for allegedly molesting a 25-year-old woman. Police held Nilesh Roy, son of a Vasai hotelier, and his friend Sajjad Ali. They were produced before court and remanded to police custody for two days.
