Kidney patient on waiting list turns liver donor after death
Nagpur: Avinash Solanki, 33, a chronic kidney disease (CKD) patient who was waiting for a transplant for years, gave a new lease of life to another 66-year-old patient through organ donation after his passing.A resident of Shanti Nagar in Nagpur, Avinash was battling CKD and had registered with the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) in 2024, both as a kidney transplant recipient and an organ donor. Despite being on the waiting list, he did not receive a kidney in time. On April 28, Avinash collapsed at home and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors treated him under intensive care. Despite all efforts, he suffered severe brain haemorrhage and was declared brain dead after thorough medical evaluation. In a remarkable act of courage and compassion, his family, including his wife Sangita, brothers Vikas and Rupesh, honoured his pledge and consented to donate his organs. The liver was successfully retrieved and transplanted into a 66-year-old woman, giving her a second chance at life. Doctors and transplant coordinators at the hospital counselled the family, who collectively took the decision to proceed with organ donation.
The ZTCC ensured allocation as per national guidelines, while hospital staff paid tribute by forming an honour corridor for the donor. Dr Shailesh Gahukar, secretary of ZTCC Nagpur, said, "We are deeply grateful for the life and legacy of Avinash Solanki. He had registered with ZTCC in 2024 for a kidney transplant but sadly did not get one in time. In his final moments, his family made a brave and kind decision to donate his liver, giving a new life to a patient in need. This selfless act shows that even in loss, one can bring hope to others."He added, "We sincerely thank his family for their courage and generosity."Avinash is survived by wife, a 3-year-old son, his brothers and parents.
