Theog MLA Rathore urges rollback of apple import duty cut
Shimla: Former Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president and Theog MLA Kuldeep Rathore on Monday met governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister, demanding immediate withdrawal of the decision to reduce import duty on apples from 50% to 25% under the free trade agreement with New Zealand.Rathore emphasised the demand to protect Himachal Pradesh's horticulture sector from the import of apples. Speaking to the mediapersons, Rathore said the reduction in import duty triggered strong resentment among orchardists, who feared massive losses to state's apple-based economy, estimated at nearly Rs 5,000 crore. He recalled that before elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to raise the duty on imported apples from 50% to 100%, a commitment that remains unfulfilled.

Rathore expressed concern that further international pressure could lead to an additional reduction in duty, worsening the crisis for local growers. Citing a statement by New Zealand's Prime Minister, Rathore said the agreement would significantly benefit New Zealand by boosting employment and exports, while Indian farmers would bear the losses. The Theog MLA added that letters were sent to all seven MPs from Himachal requesting them to raise the issue with the Prime Minister and the commerce minister. However, only Anurag Thakur responded, he said, adding that the Governor assured him that he would personally convey the matter to the Prime Minister and the commerce minister. Rathore also highlighted losses due to apple imports from Iran and Turkey through Afghanistan and said farmers' concerns were ignored despite repeated appeals. MSID:: 126230409 413 |
