Vadapalani is set to become Chennai’s next shopping hub as Metro Rail plans a full floor dedicated to retail at its Phase-2 station, making it the only station in the new network with exclusive commercial space.

Engineering constraints forced the station to be built higher than usual. Since Phase-2 tracks had to cross over the existing Phase-1 station, the structure was raised to 25m, creating space for an additional usable level.

Metro Rail officials decided to utilise the extra level for property development, converting what could have been unused structural space into a revenue-generating retail floor for shops and food outlets.

Located on Arcot Road, the station will span 140m in length and 22m in width, with three levels. The lowest level will be dedicated entirely to retail and passenger movement.

The retail level will connect directly to the existing Phase-1 Vadapalani station via a skywalk, allowing commuters to move between corridors without exiting the station complex.

The Vadapalani station is part of the 14.5-km Vadapalani–Poonamallee Bypass corridor, expected to open in February as the first operational segment of Chennai Metro’s Phase-2 network.

Regular commuters have flagged traffic worries, citing constant congestion on Arcot Road and 100 Feet Road. They stress the need for adequate parking and traffic management to avoid worsening bottlenecks.

Passengers will enter through the retail floor, browse shops or eateries, then take escalators or lifts to the ticketing concourse before proceeding to the platforms above.

Beyond the station, CMRL is planning further development at the Vadapalani terminus-cum-depot, including a multi-storey complex with bus bays to improve last-mile connectivity.
