Maheshtala (constituency no. 155) is a fully urban constituency in South 24 Parganas district, located on the southern fringes of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. It falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, held by Abhishek Banerjee of the TMC.
The Maheshtala municipality covers the entire constituency, and the area has significant industrial presence alongside a dense urban population. It was historically a CPI(M) stronghold before the TMC's sweep in 2011.
In 2021, TMC's Dulal Chandra Das won by a large margin of nearly 58,000 votes over the BJP. In 2016, TMC's Kasturi Das won the seat. The sitting MLA Dulal Chandra Das has been replaced for 2026 with Subhasis Das. BJP's Tamanath Bhowmik and Congress's Haji Abdul Hannan represent the opposition. The proximity to Kolkata and Abhishek Banerjee's stronghold of Diamond Harbour gives the TMC a structural advantage here. The constituency's urban working-class character means local employment, urban infrastructure, and healthcare services are key campaign issues. Congress's Haji Abdul Hannan is seeking to attract the minority community vote in a constituency where the TMC has dominated convincingly in recent cycles.
