In Ottapidaram, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate P. Mathanraja won the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election by 29,083 votes against DMK candidate P. M. Ramajeyam.Ottapidaram Assembly Constituency is a reserved (SC) seat in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, known as the birthplace of freedom fighter VO Chidambaram Pillai. M C Shunmugaiah (also spelled Shanmugayyaa or Shunmugaiah C) from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is the MLA for now. He won the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election with 73,110 votes (41.11% vote share), defeating P Mohan of AIADMK (64,600 votes) by a margin of 8,510 votes. Water scarcity for drinking and agriculture tops concerns, worsened by groundwater depletion for industries and poor tank desiltation. Residents also prioritize rural road improvements, youth employment, expanded healthcare and education facilities, and irrigation projects like check dams.
