Nashik: A 38-year-old farmer and his 27-year-old wife were found dead, hanging from a tree in their farm at Shivapur village in Jalgaon's Chalisgaon taluka, around 6 am on Saturday.
The Chalisgaon taluka police said they did not recover any suicide note either from the spot or the couple's house but, based on circumstances, they suspect it is a case of death by suicide. The cause is being ascertained, the police said.
The deceased have been identified as Bhagwan Jadhav and his wife Ashabai.
Assistant inspector Nitin Patil, of the Chalisgaon taluka police, said villagers spotted the couple hanging from a branch of a tree in their own farm. He said the spot was only a couple of hundred metres away from their house.
Soon after the bodies were spotted, the Chalisgaon taluka police were called, after which the panchnama and other legal formalities were completed.
Patil said the couple lived with their parents, and their two children, aged about 10 to 12, are in Mumbai at their uncle's place for education. He said the grief-struck family has just completed the last rites, and the police did not question them about what could have led the couple to take the extreme step.
However, the parents would soon be questioned.
Since the family stayed on their farm, villagers were also not able to explain what could have happened within the family that led to the two suicides, Patil said.
Patil said the police had information that Ashabai had attempted to end her life about two years ago too, but it is yet to be verified. He said that after Ashabai's suicide attempt, her husband sold off two acres of their farmland. He said that things would be clear during the future course of investigation.
One brother of Bhagwan works in a bank in Mumbai, while the other works in a security agency.
