Leemarose Martin of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won the Lalgudi constituency with a margin of 2739 votes. She garnered 60795 votes, while Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate KU PA Krishnan came second with 58056 votes.
The ruling DMK has fielded T. Parivallal Thangavel from Lalgudi for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, setting up a triangular contest in the constituency. He took on AIADMK candidate M. Leema Rose and TVK nominee K. P. Krishnan in the electoral battle.
Lalgudi Assembly constituency, located in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, forms part of the Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency.
The constituency is predominantly rural, with 76.76 per cent of the population living in rural areas and 23.24 per cent in urban areas, according to the 2011 Census estimates.
Scheduled Castes account for 20.95 per cent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes make up 0.28 per cent.
In the last Assembly elections of 2021, DMK’s A Soundarapandian retained the seat with 84,914 votes (48.6 per cent), defeating AIADMK candidate DR Dharmaraj, who received 67,965 votes, by a margin of 16,949 votes, or 9.7 per cent.
Historically, Lalgudi has been a DMK stronghold, with A Soundarapandian winning multiple terms since 2006. The constituency has seen contests primarily between the DMK and AIADMK, with occasional participation from other parties such as the CPI(M) and NTK. In 2016, Soundarapandian won with a narrower margin of 3,837 votes, reflecting a competitive election, but he strengthened his hold in 2021.
The constituency is currently represented in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by A Soundarapandian (DMK), while the Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency is represented by Arun Nehru (DMK).
