In West Bengal's English Bazar, Bharatiya Janata Party's Amlan Bhaduri secured win with a whopping 1,54,096 votes, as Trinamool Congress' Asis Kundu trailed behind with just 60,312 votes.
English Bazar in 2026 will see a contest between TMC's Asis Kundu, BJP's Amlan Bhaduri, and Congress's Masud Alam.
English Bazar is the urban heart of Malda district, covering English Bazar Municipality and surrounding gram panchayats. It falls under the Maldaha Dakshin Lok Sabha constituency and is one of the most urbanised seats in this part of West Bengal, with over 60 per cent urban population. The constituency has seen considerable political flux, particularly since a 2013 by-election following a Congress MLA's defection to TMC.
In 2016, Nihar Ranjan Ghosh, contesting as a Left Front-Congress supported independent, defeated TMC's Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury. The 2021 election witnessed a decisive BJP win: Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury defeated TMC's Choudhury by over 20,000 votes, riding the BJP wave in urban Malda. For 2026, BJP's sitting MLA is not on the ticket, with the party fielding Amlan Bhaduri instead. TMC's Asis Kundu and Congress's Masud Alam will contest the urban seat that is historically competitive and could swing based on local governance perceptions and community calculus.
