Bhowanipur Sorbhog Assembly Election Results 2026

Bhowanipur-Sorbhog Assembly constituency is one of the 126 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, created in the 2023 delimitation by merging the former Bhabanipur and Sorbhog seats. It is located in Bajali district and falls under the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency covers a rural area of approximately 378 square kilometres with around 1.5 lakh registered electors and 204 polling stations. The main political parties in Assam include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People's Front (BPF), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, both predecessor seats produced notable results. In Bhabanipur, BJP's Phanidhar Talukdar won a by-election with 64,200 votes, defeating INC's Sailendra Nath Das by 25,641 votes. In Sorbhog, CPI(M)'s Manoranjan Talukdar won by defeating BJP's Sankar Chandra Das by 10,262 votes — making Sorbhog one of the few Left-held seats in Assam. In 2026, BJP fields Ranjeet Kumar Dass while CPI(M)'s Manoranjan Talukdar contests for Congress — making this a direct BJP vs Left-Congress combine battle in the merged constituency. The 2026 Assam Assembly elections will test Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP-led government, which swept to power with a comfortable majority in 2021. With the opposition Congress-AIUDF combine seeking to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment, every constituency will be a crucial battleground in deciding whether the state returns a second consecutive BJP government.
