Katigorah Assembly constituency is one of the 126 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, formerly listed as Katigora before the 2023 delimitation exercise updated the spelling. It is a general (unreserved) seat in Hailakandi district in the Barak Valley and falls under the Silchar Lok Sabha segment.
The main political parties in Assam include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People's Front (BPF), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM).
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, INC's Khalil Uddin Mazumder won the constituency (then named Katigora) with 83,268 votes, defeating BJP's Gautam Roy (76,329 votes) by a margin of 6,939 votes — a closely contested result that makes this a genuine swing seat going into 2026. In a notable political shift, the 2026 BJP candidate Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha was the 2021 INC winner in Karimganj North; he now crosses the floor to contest Katigorah for BJP. Congress fields Amar Chand Jain.
The 2026 Assam Assembly elections will test Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP-led government, which swept to power with a comfortable majority in 2021. With the opposition Congress-AIUDF combine seeking to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment, every constituency will be a crucial battleground in deciding whether the state returns a second consecutive BJP government.
