The Dholai Assembly constituency is one of the 126 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly and is numbered 120. It is reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates and falls under the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency. Major political parties active in the state include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM).
In the 2021 Assembly elections, BJP’s Parimal Suklabaidya won the seat by defeating Congress candidate Kamakhya Prasad Mala with a margin of 20,392 votes. A bypoll was later held in 2024 following Suklabaidya’s resignation. The BJP retained the seat, with its candidate Nihar Ranjan Das defeating Congress’ Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha by 9,098 votes.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Parimal Suklabaidya went on to win from the Silchar parliamentary constituency, defeating Congress candidate Surya Kanta Sarkar by a margin of 2,64,311 votes.
According to Election Commission data, the Dholai constituency had 1,50,265 registered voters in the 2021 Assembly elections. This included 76,137 male voters, 72,901 female voters, and one voter from the third gender. A total of 1,009 valid postal votes were cast. The number of service voters stood at 583, including 575 men and eight women.
