Aravakurichi Assembly constituency, located in Karur district of Tamil Nadu, forms part of the Karur Lok Sabha constituency. According to the 2011 Census estimates, about 65.31 per cent of the population in the constituency is rural while 34.69 per cent is urban. Scheduled Castes account for 20.83 per cent of the population and Scheduled Tribes about 0.02 per cent.
In the last Assembly elections of 2021, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won the seat with R. Elango securing 93,369 votes, or 52.72 per cent of the vote share. He defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s K. Annamalai, who received 68,553 votes. The margin of victory was 24,816 votes, or about 14.01 per cent of the total votes polled. The BJP secured 38.71 per cent of the vote, while the Naam Tamilar Katchi polled 4.06 per cent.
Historically, the constituency has witnessed shifts between the DMK and the AIADMK. M. A. Khaleelur Rahman of the DMK won the seat in 2006, followed by another DMK victory in 2011 with K. C. Palanisamy. The AIADMK captured the constituency in the 2016 Assembly election with V. Senthil Balaji. However, he was among the AIADMK MLAs disqualified in 2017 after withdrawing support to the state government, which led to a by-election in 2019. The by-poll was won by the AIADMK’s V. V. Senthilnathan. The DMK later captured the seat in the 2021 Assembly election with R. Elango.
The constituency is currently represented in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by R Elango of the DMK, while the Karur Lok Sabha constituency is represented in Parliament by S Jothimani of the Congress.
