Coonoor Assembly constituency in The Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu falls under the Nilgiris (SC) Lok Sabha seat. The constituency has a population of 2.43 lakh, according to the 2011 Census, with 61.67per cent urban and 38.33per cent rural residents. Scheduled Castes account for 31.9per cent and Scheduled Tribes 3.54per cent of the population.
Coonoor has largely witnessed a bipolar contest between the DMK and AIADMK over the past decade, with vote share alternating between the two in Assembly polls, while the DMK has maintained a relatively stronger edge in past few Parliamentary elections.
In the last held Assembly polls in 2021, DMK’s K. Ramachandran secured victory with 61,820 votes, defeating AIADMK’s D. Vinoth by a margin of 4,105 votes (3.04per cent). Voter turnout stood at 70.82per cent in 2021, while it was 66.52per cent in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
