Coimbatore (North) Assembly constituency, situated in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, forms part of the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency and is entirely urban in character. According to the 2011 Census, the constituency has a population of about 3.52 lakh, with 100 per cent classified as urban. Scheduled Castes constitute 9.21 per cent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes account for a marginal 0.13 per cent.
Electorally, Coimbatore (North) has consistently witnessed close contests, primarily between the AIADMK and the DMK. The AIADMK retained the seat in the 2021 Assembly election, where Amman K. Arjunan secured victory with 81,454 votes, narrowly defeating the DMK’s Shanmugasundaram V.M. by a margin of 4,001 votes (1.99 per cent of total votes polled).
Historical voting patterns suggest shifting political dynamics. While the AIADMK dominated the 2011 Assembly election with a commanding vote share, the gap between the AIADMK and the DMK has narrowed considerably in subsequent elections, reflecting a more balanced and competitive electoral landscape. The constituency is currently represented by Amman K. Arjunan (AIADMK) in the State Assembly, while Ganapathy Rajkumar P (DMK) serves as the Lok Sabha MP for Coimbatore.
