Ulundurpettai Assembly constituency is located in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu and has largely remained a stronghold of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the past two Assembly elections, though margins have fluctuated over time.
In the 2016 Assembly polls, the constituency had 2,74,436 electors, with 2,27,476 valid votes polled. AIADMK’s R Kumaraguru retained the seat with 81,973 votes, defeating the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate G R Vasanthavel by a narrow margin of 4,164 votes, pointing to a closely contested race.
Earlier, in 2011, Ulundurpettai had 2,29,056 electors and recorded 1,91,047 valid votes. Kumaraguru R won comfortably with 1,14,794 votes, defeating Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi candidate Mohamedyousuf M by a margin of 53,508 votes.
The sharp contrast in victory margins between 2011 and 2016 suggests shifting voter dynamics and a more competitive political landscape in recent years.
