Srirangam Assembly constituency, located in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, forms part of the Tiruchirappalli Lok Sabha constituency. According to the 2011 Census estimates, Scheduled Castes account for 17.79 per cent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes constitute around 0.21 per cent.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the seat with M Palaniyandi securing 113,904 votes, or 47.42 per cent of the vote share. He defeated the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate Kupa Krishnan, who received 93,989 votes, by a margin of 19,915 votes, or about 8.29 per cent.
Historically, Srirangam is a high-profile constituency. J Jayalalithaa, leader of the AIADMK, won the seat in 2011 with a commanding 59 per cent vote share, and thereafter became the CM of the state at the time. Following her disqualification as MLA for being convicted in a legal case, the constituency held a by-election in 2015, which was won by AIADMK’s S Valarmathi. Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016, while serving as chief minister, added further political significance to this seat, influencing subsequent elections. In 2016, the AIADMK retained the seat, but the DMK captured it in 2021.
The constituency is currently represented in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by M Palaniyandi of the DMK, while the Tiruchirappalli Lok Sabha constituency is represented in Parliament by Durai Vaiko of the MDMK.
