Athoor Assembly constituency, located in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, forms part of the Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency has a predominantly rural demographic profile, with about 66.3 per cent of its population classified as rural and 33.7 per cent urban according to the 2011 Census. Scheduled Castes account for around 21.47 per cent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes constitute about 0.12 per cent.
In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam registered a decisive victory in the seat with I. Periyasamy securing 1,65,809 votes. He defeated the Pattali Makkal Katchi’s M Thilagabama, who polled 30,238 votes. The DMK secured 72.11 per cent of the vote, while the PMK received 13.15 per cent.
Recent electoral trends show consistent victories for the DMK in the constituency, with I Periyasamy winning the seat in four consecutive Assembly elections — 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021.
The constituency is currently represented in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by Periyasamy, while the Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency is represented in Parliament by R Sachithanantham of the CPI(M).
