Sankarapuram Assembly constituency is located in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu and has traditionally witnessed direct contests between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, reflecting the broader bipolar pattern in the region.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,33,544 electors, with 1,89,098 valid votes polled. AIADMK’s Udhayasuriyan T secured victory with 79,571 votes, defeating DMK’s Anbumani G by a margin of 16,248 votes, indicating a clear mandate in favour of the ruling party at the time.
Earlier, in 2011, Sankarapuram had 2,03,945 electors and recorded 1,67,412 valid votes. AIADMK’s Mohan P won the seat with 90,218 votes, defeating DMK’s Thamizhselvan K by 28,764 votes.
The results over these two cycles suggest a period of AIADMK dominance in the constituency, though shifting margins indicate evolving voter preferences influenced by state-level political trends.
