Kavundampalayam Assembly constituency is located in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district and falls under the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency. It is predominantly urban in nature, with 84.73per cent of its 4.35 lakh population residing in urban areas and only 15.27per cent in rural regions, according to the 2011 Census. Scheduled Castes account for 11.9per cent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes comprise 0.99per cent.
Electorally, Kavundampalayam has emerged as a closely contested seat between the AIADMK and the DMK, with both parties maintaining strong support bases over the past decade. The AIADMK has held an advantage in Assembly elections, including a victory in 2021.
In the 2021 Assembly election, AIADMK’s G. Arunkumar won the seat with 1,35,669 votes, defeating DMK’s R. Krishnan, who secured 1,25,893 votes. The margin of victory was 9,776 votes, or 3.17per cent of the total votes polled.
Over the years, voting patterns in Kavundampalayam have reflected shifting alliances and multi-party contests. While the AIADMK dominated the 2011 Assembly election with over 63per cent vote share, the gap between the AIADMK and DMK has narrowed significantly in subsequent elections.
