Mettuppalayam Assembly constituency in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu falls under the Nilgiris (SC) Lok Sabha seat. As per the 2011 Census, the constituency has a population of 3.26 lakh, with 54.66per cent urban and 45.34per cent rural residents. Scheduled Castes account for 16.02per cent and Scheduled Tribes 2.69per cent of the total population.
Electorally, Mettuppalayam has traditionally leaned towards the AIADMK in Assembly elections, though the contest has become increasingly competitive in recent years. While AIADMK secured comfortable victories in 2011 and 2016, the 2021 Assembly election saw a sharply narrowed margin, reflecting a tightening bipolar contest with the DMK.
In the last Assembly polls of 2021, AIADMK’s A.K. Selvaraj won with 1,05,231 votes, defeating DMK’s T.R. Shanmugasundaram by a narrow margin of 2,456 votes (1.1per cent). Voter turnout stood at 75.96per cent in 2021 polls.
