Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, Assembly Constituency No. 11—popularly known as R.K. Nagar—is a densely inhabited coastal seat in North Chennai marked by fishing communities, port‑related labour settlements, clusters of informal housing and a heavy reliance on welfare schemes for daily sustenance. The constituency has often been in the national spotlight: former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa represented the seat after her 2015–16 election victory, and following her death, a high‑profile by‑poll saw T.T.V. Dhinakaran win as an Independent amid allegations of cash‑for‑votes, reinforcing the seat’s reputation as politically sensitive. Local issues include coastal erosion and vulnerability of shoreline housing, persistent waterlogging due to inadequate stormwater drainage, poor sanitation and irregular drinking water supply, overcrowding at government hospitals and primary health centres, fire safety risks in narrow, densely packed streets, acute shortage of open and public spaces, and gaps in disaster preparedness. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK’s J. John Ebenezer won the R.K. Nagar seat with 95,763 votes, defeating AIADMK’s R.S. Raajesh, who secured 53,284 votes, by a margin of 42,479 votes. Earlier, in the 2016 polls, AIADMK’s J. Jayalalithaa won the constituency by a large margin, polling 97,218 votes against DMK’s Shimla Muthuchozhan’s 57,673 votes, a victory margin of 39,545 votes
